Already (Again)

And already the weekend's over. Sad, I know. But "Scar That Never Heals" is pretty kick-ass, so it's a good way to finish a weekend of Jeremy Fisher songs.

Already

Now, I know I just did a week last week, but I'm doing a weekend this weekend already. a Jeremy Fisher weekend, specifically.
I'm starting with the Jeremy Fisher song I've known the longest, which is really probably less than a year before the other ones I know. It's called "Cigarette." I had to explain to Eric that it's awfully metaphorical, and that Jeremy Fisher doesn't actually want to be smoked as a cigarette. I guess Eris can't catch things like that.

Odd

That's odd. That last post should have been Thursday. Late Thursday, yes, but Thursday. The time on this thing must be wrong. I'll look into it. Anyway, for actual Friday's post, I'm going with the song "Taller Children." It's a song that I really do quite enjoy. Plus, Elizabeth & the Catapult is a kick-... butt... band name. Not as good as "She Likes Cloth," though.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

And does anyone get that second reference? Because for those of you who do, you'd be surprised and appalled at how many people don't.

Legal and Illegal

Lighthouses are legal. Which is a good thing. I'm sad for the one that used to be in Alexandria, though. Anyway, whalers aren't legal. The Lighthouse and the Whaler. Legal and illegal.
Yes, I'm really desperate for something to say.
But that's neither here nor there. What is both here and there is their song "White Days." And in both locations, it's pretty damn good.

Which is always a nice thing for a song to be.

Relatively

I'm relatively excited for today's song. I mean, not as excited as I was on Saturday, but plenty more excited than I was yesterday. It took me a while to realize it, but "Tonight I Have to Leave It" by The Shout Out Louds is a good song. In fact, it's on one of the CDs I'll be sending Caitlin in the near future! Yay!

Fast

I'm doing this fast. In-Flight Safety. The song's "Crash/Land." Not sure why the slash. Just is. Crazy!

Which One?

Hey, is the band Cuff the Duke cuff as in handcuff, or cuff as in hit? Are we arresting him, or do we just feel like beating him up? Which one is it, duders?
Anyway, "Surging Revival." I didn't much care for lots of Cuff the Duke, but this one's not too shabs.

("Shabs? Short for 'shabby?' Hilarious!")

Here We Are!!!!!

We're here! I'm so excited! Here we are, at the end of My Week! And my most favourite band in the whole wide worrrrrrrld!
It's The Arcade Fire, of course!
Now, on August third, 2010, I took the day off work. I went into town to give blood. Also I bought the first couple of Scott Pilgrim books. But it was also the day I turned 19 and a half! And, making the best half-birthday present ever, The Arcade Fire released their new album, "The Suburbs!"
Oh, I was so excited!!!
So anyway, in Cornwall, there's only one place where you can buy music anymore, and that's Wal-Mart. And Wal-Mart is not cheap when it comes to music. Also, they don't usually have albums the day they come out. Which sucks. But I figured I'd try it anyway. And they did have it! And it only cost $13.74! Holy shot-nurkers!
So naturally, I bought it.
Meanwhile, Live88.5 was having "Arcade Fire Day," in which they played a song from the new album every hour on the hour. When they did, you had to text "Arcade Fire" and your first and last name to 885885 for a chance to win the new album. I tried a couple times, before getting to Wal-Mart. Then, a couple days later, I got a call from 88.5 telling me I had won the new album! w00t!
So then I had to go into Ottawa. But that was fine, because we got to hang out with Laura! And then I had two of the album, so I gave one (the one I paid for) to my sister, instead of paying her for gas.
Now, I've decided to feature the first single from the album. It's called "Ready to Start." I love it, and when I heard it for the first time, I almost died! Good thing I didn't, though, because then, who would have finished milking the cows? Not the cows, that's for sure!

Friday, November 26, 2010

This Time

This time, I am using the first single from the new album. That's because "Fixed" is the only song from the new Stars album that I do actually know. Anyway, they, of course, are tied for my second favourite band. I'm so excited for tomorrow!!!

Thursday, November 25, 2010

Twice

The name of today's song is the same phrase twice over. Anyway, The New Pornographers are tied for second place in my top favourite bands. We're so close to my favourite band and the end of My Week!!! I'm so excited!!!
Anyway, I was going to feature the first single/title track from their new album, but the other day, I was listening to a different song from the album, and it was really good. So instead, I decided to feature "Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk."

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Movin' On Up

No, The Jeffersons aren't my third favourite band. But we are moving on up the ranks to my third favourite: Spiral Beach. Now, remember at the beginning of My Week how I said I'd be featuring new songs from all the bands? Well in this instance it's the newest I can get. They released their last album over a year ago; it was September or October of 2009. Anyway, I decided to go with "May Go Round (In a Mania)" from that album.

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

Tie-Breaker

Okay, I don't know why I called it that. Tokyo Police Club isn't a tie-breaker; the band is just tied with Metric for my fourth-favourite.
Anyway, I decided to go with the first single from their new album "Champ!" which came out this summer. It's called "Wait Up (Boots of Danger)."

Monday, November 22, 2010

Gymnasium Love

When Metric, who are tied for my fourth-favourite band, played a show at my school last year, they played in the gym of the Athletic Complex. Emily Haines changed "Stadium Love" to "Gymnasium Love."

She was really proud of that. After the show, I got a chance to talk to her briefly and get a picture with her. She really was really proud of that change.

Like Veran!

Now I know I Fight Dragons would appreciate that reference.
Sorry, let me start at the beginning. Welcome to My Week. This is the week when I'm featuring my seven favourite bands, counting down. In fifth place, we have the only non-Canadian band on the roster: IFD, of course. They're pretty nerdy and awesome; I mean, look:

Anyway, I'm certain they'd appreciate the reference "Like Veran!" in response to the title of their song "She's Got Sorcery," which is from their new album, coming out very soon. (Oh yeah, I didn't mention -- this week, I'm using new songs from all of them.) Because Veran is a sorceress (ergo, has got sorcery) and is from a Legend of Zelda game.
Win.

A While

I had a song by Conor Oberst for a while. It's okay. Then my roommate gave me a whole album's worth of his songs, and he's actually pretty awesome! Conor Oberst, that is. My roommate's... okay.
Anyway, my favourite song was one called "NYC -- Gone, Gone."

BB

I'm going to be honest. As great as Blackberries are, I do find them a little disappointing at times. However, it is true that they often have good music in their commercials. Like the new Blackberry Torch commercial.
I saw the commercial once, and the song that was playing was pretty good, based on the ten or so seconds of it that I heard. I was just about to say, "That song sounds pretty good; I wonder what it's called." But before I could, my roommate said, "Wow. That song sucks!"
She has... different taste in music.
Anyway, I looked it up. It's called "Fiyah" by Tune-Yards. I think it's pronounce how a British person would pronounce the word "fire," like the Lewis Carroll characters (from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There) Hatta and Haigha, whose names are actually pronounced how a British person would pronounce "Hatter" and "Hare."

Firefly

Firefly was a great show! Like, really awesome! I'm really sad stupid Fox canceled it. Anyway, one of the main cast was Morena Baccarin, who was also in a few episodes of The O.C. Plus, she was Cloe in the episode of How I Met Your Mother "Swarley." It was at the end of that episode that they played a song by The Explorers Club. It's actually the only reason I know "Forever."

!

When a friend of mine posted a YouTube link of Mr. Blue Sky, I remarked that I hadn't, as she asked, heard of Electric Light Orchestra. My sister wasn't impressed. But now I have! Huzzah!

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

?

I don't even remember how this song goes. But it made it onto my list of songs to feature, so I must like it enough. If you have trouble finding Wavves, go to thesixtyone; that's where I found them, particularly "King of the Beach."

Monday, November 15, 2010

.

There's this band. They're called fun. unless you ask Wikipedia, who says they're called Fun. I know, eh? The first one is way cooler. Anyway, le chanson est appellé "The Gambler."

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Sounds Like....

Kingdom Flying Club. Ever heard of them? Neither had I. But I found that the lead singer, at least in the song "Artists Are Boring," sounds kind of like the lead singer of The Gaslight Anthem.
It's not him, though.

Saturday, November 13, 2010

A Damned Fool!

At first I didn't really like "Love Will Tear Us Apart." Then I got older and more mature or whatever, and I realized what a fool I was. A damned fool! Joy Division was an amazing band, and this remarkable song is a testament to the musically wonderful decade that was the '80s.

Friday, November 12, 2010

Cars!

Tricked you, didn't I? No, I'm not going to talk about cars. I don't find them as exciting as lots of guys do. But "M.A.G.I.C." is from a car commercial. Kia, maybe? I don't know. There were invisible people. Except the people in the car. Because they stood out.
Anyway, the band in question, The Sound of Arrows, is Scandinavian of some sort or something. I don't know.

I don't know...

Thursday, November 11, 2010

Hmm.......

Hmm...... How do I know today's song? Now, I know I know Goldspot because of The O.C. They covered "Float On" by Modest Mouse, and that's on the CD "Covering Our Tracks" that I gave my sister for Christmas one time years ago.
Oh! I remember! It was in an episode of How I Met Your Mother. Yes. "Rewind" was in the season five episode "Double Date."
Man, that show has some good music!

All by Mistake!

All by mistake! That's how I discovered the band Windmill. I forget why, but I was looking up windmills on Wikipedia. something I wanted to know, I guess. Anyway, I typed in "Windmill" and got the relevant article. But then I wondered, "What would come up if I go to the disambiguation page?" So, I typed in "Windmill (disambiguation)" and got a lot of boring results. HOWEVER! One result was some band called Windmill. Some indie band from the UK. They didn't have an article (still don't), but they had a mention. And that was enough.
So, I looked them up, and came across a few songs. Particularly, "Ellen Save Our Energy."
I think this one is actually going on the CD I'm making for Caitlin, so SHH!

Erotic Exploration

Beautiful Small Machines talk(s?) about erotic exploration in this song. Which to me is kind of weird; how can "Robots in Love" have eroticism? They're robots! Then again, if they're robots, then how would they be in love? I mean, just the other day, I was telling Cleverbot that I was a supercomputer bent on world domination, and as a supercomputer, I had no emotions. Hm. The eternal mystery, I guess...

Continuing Continuing Continuing

And now the weekend's ending. After re-realizing how good the previously featured Throw Me the Statue song was, I hit up the internet to find some more music. I got plenty, including one called "This is How We Kiss." It took me a few listens, but I grew to like it. Which is always a good thing to do, I suppose.

Well, maybe not always.

Continuing Continuing

Day two in the Weekend of Continuing brings us She & Him. Specifically, "In the Sun."

The video is also very well worth looking into.

Continuing

Yesterday I had a reprisal. A reprisal of three songs, previously featured. I would like to take this weekend, which I will call the Continuing Weekend, to feature different songs by each of those. Because they're all great, and I've only featured one song by each of those.
First, Florence + the Machine. The song is "Kiss With a Fist." I find it's awfully upbeat for a song about an abusive relationship. But that's part of what makes it great!

I'll bet she's an amazing performer.

Thursday, November 4, 2010

Reprise

There are a few songs that I've previously featured, but that I have since realized to a much greater degree. So, I'm reprising them, so to speak.
First, "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + the Machine.
I discovered it and featured. Then, months later, I rediscovered it and realized how awesome it was. Then, months later, I heard it on the radio and they were all, "This new song is so so great!" And I was all, "New? HA! Come on, radio people! You're months behind!" (That part of the story would be way better if you could actually hear me saying it.)
Anyway, this song is awesome!

Next, I'm bringing back some She & Him. I love Zooey Deschanel. She's awesome. I realized that when I watched (500) Days of Summer, as I didn't realize she was "she" when I first featured "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?"

And finally, a song called "Waving at the Shore." I wish I could teach myself the words, but I don't think they're anywhere on the Internet. Too bad Throw Me the Statue is such an obscure band.

Tuesday, November 2, 2010

&, I think

i think the song is "Up & Away," not "Up and Away." Either way, it's a good song. By Hotspur. They don't have a Wikipedia article, but the word has a disambiguation page.
Anyway, that's not what's important. What's important is that it's a good song all the time always.

Monday, November 1, 2010

Long

My story about how I discovered the band Pale Young Gentlemen is unnecessarily long and detailed and I'm tired, so I'm not going to tell it.
Anyway, "The Crook of My Good Arm" is freakin' awesome! Listen to it. Now. Seriously. Go on. It's on YouTube.

Also, happy November!

Not the Cure

For a long time, I thought the song "I Melt With You" was called "I'll Stop the World and Melt With You." Turns out that's just a line, and the title is, as seen above, shorter. Also, I thought that it was by The Cure. It's not. It's by Modern English.

Friday, October 29, 2010

One Word

The Hannah Georgas song that I heard on the radio this summer is called "Dancefloor," not "Dance Floor." It's one word, not two. I discovered that about 40 seconds before writing this.

Thursday, October 28, 2010

No "!"

I think when "Pas de Cheval" came out, they didn't have the exclamation mark, so they were Panic at the Disco.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Bear in Mind

Bear in mind, before I tell you this, that I don't claim to be a music critic. I don't necessarily tell why I like a song; I just tell you that it's good or awesome or whatever.
I'm telling you this because the next song on my list is "Drinking Games" by Library Voices, and I don't remember at all how it goes. I know I like it; I just forget the song itself.
Anyway, enjoy!

It's Not Morbid

"It's not morbid," Aunt Eliza replied. "It's realistic." And then she gave Janet this super ugly family thing made of several generations of hair. "It's a hairloom!" she told them, smiling.
Anyway, it was super ugly and Felicity was pissed that they got it. She was all, "Why can't we just tell her what we want and what we don't want?" and Janet told her, "That's just not the way things are done." And Felicity's all like, "Well maybe that's how things should be done!"
It was that way of thinking that got her to go to medical school.
Anyway, "To Lose My Life" by White Lies is about as morbidly titled as the last song of theirs I featured, prompting this "Road to Avonlea" story.

Okay, Let's Do This

Okay, I'm finally back. I've put together an ever-growing list. Let's hope it keeps growing, rather than shrinking, so it doesn't get to the point that I have nothing to feature.

I'll start off with a song called "Let Me Go On" by a band called Seabird. I keep forgetting I like this song, so every time I listen to it, I always think, "Oh yeah. That's why I downloaded this song.

Friday, October 1, 2010

Sorry!

Okay, I realize I just came back after months, but I have this whole list of songs to feature, and they, like my iTunes, are on my computer, which is on its way to Dell right now, so that they can fix poor Gertrude's backlightt. As such, I am currently using my sister's old computer, which runs on Microsoft 2000. Yeah, 2000. Professional.
Anyway, so I may not be able to feature for a while.
So! I've come up with a solution.

Here are some things to look into:
The Arcade Fire just released a new album.

Sign up to I Fight Dragons' e-mail list for updates and free music downloads.
http://www.ifightdragons.com/

I just discovered an indie music station on iTunes. It's great.
http://somafm.com

There. That should keep you busy for a while!

The End

It's the end of the Month of Musicals, and I have a great way to go out: Enchanted!!! I love Amy Adams, I've recently realized, and also, Cyclops can sing. Plus, James Marsden's character isn't nearly as diva-y when he plays a fairytale prince, so...
But I digress. If you know Enchanted, then you know "Happy Working Song," and you know it's awesome.

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Oh No!

Oh no! I almost forgot!
Okay, so until today, I had three favourite Disney films (in no particular order): Robin Hood, The Emperor's New Groove, and Mulan. Today, though, I realized it was necessary to add a fourth one, which to me is equal to those three. And that one is Beauty and the Beast. I mean, come on. How could it not be a favourite? Anyway, I almost don't want to feature it, because it's so well-known and parodied already, but I've decided to go with "Be Our Guest" for this one.

A Mad-cap Musical Romp! ... Good! ... Fun!

When Jack finda out he has three possible dads, Liz excitedly realizes it's a Mamma Mia! She advises herself not to force it, and to "just let it happen," and then convinces Jack to invite them under some false pretence to New York. He agrees to meet with them, but assures Liz that that's all he's promising. Then Liz tells him, "And all I'm promising is 'a mad-cap musical romp! Dot-dot-dot Good! Dot-dot-dot Fun!' ....... It said that on the poster." I wish Liz Lemon could be my best friend.
Anyway, one of my favourites from it is "Take a Chance on Me." (I had to go back and make sure it wasn't the ABBA song I had previously featured; I tend to forget these things.)

It's also the song that Andy uses to ask Angela out on The Office, which makes it even better!

The Name Just Doesn't Work in English

You can't really call it The Miserables. It just doesn't work. That's why you have to stick with the French name, Les Misérables. It's not that different, anyway.
A few years ago, at the Williamstown Fair (Canada's oldest fair!)'s talent show, a little girl, who must've only been about six or seven, sang "Castle on a Cloud." She was adorable, plus a really good singer. Then, another girl, who thought she was old enough to have the hips, breasts, and attitude for it, sang "All That Jazz." She was about nine or ten. It was unfortunate.

A Sequel?

Yeah, a sequel. Andrew Lloyd Webber has decided he wants more money, and that the way to get it is by writing a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. And then he came out asking why everyone was so upset that he was writing a sequel. Ugh.
Anyway, from the original, I really do like the song "Masquerade."

Goes With...

Now, today's goes with yesterday's. It's not part of the week, but it's actually Commentary! The Musical from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Yes, that's right. There's commentary, and it's a musical. Maurissa Tancharoen (I think that's how you spell it) sings perhaps my favourite song from it, "Nobody's Asian in the Movies."

Ending the Week

During the Writers' Strike, Joss Whedon decided to release a show online. The show was called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Though a musical in three acts, it was technically a three-episode series (which is how it was nominated for an Emmy). Anyway, it's hilarious and amazing and awesome.
The opening song in Act Two is called "My Eyes."
